Thoughts on this 1940 Walking Liberty half? Also, I'm trying to gauge brightness of photos, so I took two exposures of the reverse. Please let me know which of the two reverse side photos looks better (i.e. "correct brightness") on your screen, if you don't mind. Edited by BudJillett 05/25/2020 1:39 pm

Yes, brighter photos would help.

Okay, I took and posted new photos. Couple people saying they're dark. So I took two exposures of the reverse this time. Please let me know which of the two reverse side photos looks right to you. Thanks, all!

Looks like some minor circulation. AU-58 with a very weak strike.

No hand or thumb at all and feathers and wings lack definition . Overall dull appearance of coin . I'll say an AU example that has been way over dipped

AU-58, light wear, and seems to have some luster loss.

Wear will show as lack of definition + flatness + dullness, whereas a weak strike will show as lack of definition with luster still present—not wear/flatness so much.

Yes but this this particular coin, liberty's leg and the eagles breast both look worn to me. Then again I'm not good at grading.

MS Details. Weak strike and definitely overdipped.

I meant my previous answer as just something in general to coin grading, not specific to this coin. FWIW I'm new to this, but that was some info I had come across recently that I found helpful.

This coin still has original cartwheel luster so it would not have circulated enough to wear the center of the coin on both sides as the details indicate. Many of the early 40's S Mint Walkers have weak strikes. This one is very weak.
