hi all just got this 88O in the mail. I noticed this pretty large gouge or strike through in front of the lips and chin , it doesn't look like a nick , looks like from minting. I was searching online and found another 88O Van 1A3 with a nearly identical feature. any ideas on if this happened during minting? I tried to zoom in best I can
While it's possible as a multiple strike defect. I'd guess this one is a planchet flaw or Lamination defect. If you can provide pics of other 1A3's with this issue, I'd love to see them.
seller I got it from says its a strike through , I am surprised it wouldn't grade with details with a strike through like that but I wonder if it just knocked it down a grade, graded at MS-63 Coin has a insane amount of luster so everything shows.
