Hi Everyone,

My name is Amitav Paul and I am from Kolkata,India. I received a copper coin and I was told this piece is a fragment of a copper coin from Roman empire but I would appreciate if anyone can give valuable input and little more details for me to able to understand about the piece of coin.
I would really appreciate everyone's help and guidance.

Thanks.

Huh, it looks pretty, but I don't think it's Roman, or at least not Roman imperial. (Could in principle be a provincial.)
I'd have guessed Indian, but the K makes me wonder if it's actually Greek.

And someone will probably be along soon to explain why it's actually a 2nd century demichalkos from Kyleopolis or whatever.

Incidentally, how large is the fragment?

EDIT: also, to CCF!

I actually received this piece from one of my friend from Ukraine,so probably not an Indian coin. But I can't say...experts comments will be greatly helpful.

...I thought it looked familiar. It looks almost like it's from Pantikapaion; an actual Pantikapaion coin wouldn't have that K there, but it could be from one of the neighboring towns. I'm guessing that it probably used to depict a bow case.

I'll try to look it up; will respond if I find a plausible answer.

OK, found a plausible answer on Wildwinds:

Quote:
Olbia, Thrace-Sarmatia. AE22, 310-280 BC. 10.24 g. Horned bearded river-god Borysthenes left. / OΛBIO, Bow in case; above axe; KI monogram above. SNG Cop.85var (monog.); Sear SG 1685; BMC 10; SNG BM Black Sea 467.

(It's the second to last entry on the list, immediately above the words "Julia Domna".)

Um, quick question: would it be a problem if I decide to post those photos on my blog at some point?

(I would probably link to this thread, but I can't guarantee it.)
