Hi CCF,

I am looking at a 1808 Potosi 8 Reales, wondering what your thoughts are on the grade, and more importantly the authenticity, of this coin. The surfaces look good to me, but the edge devices look... odd.

Thanks!

Coin generally looks good. The edge is another issue.

I would check the weight first and then the density to make sure it was near 90% silver. Combined you can tell if the edge was filed off and possibly replaced.

This coin looks like it has been fooled with around the edge. The raised edge design seems to show in some places and not in others - like the edge is not square to the face of the coin.
