It doubt this coin is worth over face vale. That being said, I'd like to know what error is going on above the shield. If it is even an error...

Neither - early stages of a die chip, which is typically not considered an error, but a die event (although the definition gets a little murky and some people do consider die chips, cracks, and Cuds to be errors). This is a common place to find die chips on shield cents. Probably no added value, but a fun find!

Yes looks like the early stages of a die chip. I assume that you were unable to deflate it with the tip of a wooden toothpick--is that right?
