Yet another possible keeper... this would be an upgrade to the VF-20 that I have at present. But, as always seems to be then case with these beautiful things, it's not cheap. Thoughts about this? I'd be very curious to hear some best guesses as to grade. Not less than EF-40 I should think but...further up from there?

Wow nice coin. Its at the very least EF40, but I think this one could reach EF45, depending on who grades it.

If it were mine, I'd mark EF45 on the 2x2 and tuck it nicely into my binder.

Also, did you noticed the repunched 18?

@TheDeductible - I did but I was not sure whether that was a variety or the norm. It's not mentioned in the Borselino magnum opus....

I dont see any obvious dings or scratches. If the fields are free of marks or scratches., I have no problem with EF45.

BTW - I consulted with B Borsellino and his impression is that there is that all of the 1885 20 cent have the double punched "18".

I guess we have to assume Barry is right since he has studied so many coins.

Cheers

Did not - at least not yet. I actually think it's a quite beautiful example for that particular year...strong strike obv and rev and the toning is pretty clearly original. But the asking price is quite high - substantially more than the Charlton or other trend prices. Which, as I think most of us agree, are already pretty inflated.
