PCGS - In today's article we re-visit the "The Wonderful World of $2 Banknotes" from the May/June PCGS Rare Coin Market Report. The first Legal Tender $2 notes were authorized for issue on February 25, 1862 and carry a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. These notes were issued until Series 1869, the "Rainbow" issues we covered about a month back.

I assume being overly elaborate and busy was a form of anti-counterfeit measures at the time.

I know that $2 denominations (in this case $2 banknotes) have never been popular in America, but they are popular in the rest of the World.

Other examples are 2 Cents and 20 Cents, but the $20 banknote and Double Eagle seem to have escaped this rejection.

I have yet to acquire and example of a 2 Cents and a Double Dime in my collection.
