It is very interesting to me that a 40% silver half dollar is going for about 3x face or $1.50 while a 90% silver half is going for 10x face, $5.00 or more. The silver amount is a bit more than double while the price is more than triple. Why?

90% silver halves are more desireable because they have a lower smelting fee and take up less space then 40%ers do (for the same amount of silver)

It works the same with copper wire and copper pipe. The wire is more pure and worth more.

Speaking of copper wire, I have some I need to strip this weekend. I get scraps from all the construction sites I go to. I just have to wait for the price to go back up before I take it to the scrap yard.

I think there are some practical reasons as mentioned before but also the mental idea of getting "more" silver.

In addition to the above comments, your math is a little off. Speaking of junk U.S. silver coinage, 3X face is correct for 40% but 90% halves are only worth 8X face currently.

Anybody trying to sell junk 90% at 10X face should be avoided with silver under $10/ounce.

Actually, I was talking about E-Bay sales and the 10x face is really low. It is more like 12x face.

I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I haven't seen too many places selling 90% at 10 X Face or under...forget about spot

APMEX.com has bags of 90% at 8.8X face.

ttp://www.apmex.com/Category/17/90_Silver_Coins_Rolls__Bags.aspx

There are other sources but 10X face is almost $14/ounce without factoring in wear. I wouldn't pay $4 over spot for junk silver and you shouldn't have to either.

APMEX does have the $500 and up face US bags at that price, but in lesser amounts such as a roll of 50 mercs ( $5.00) face is $100.43 and for the basic 90% silver in less than 500 quantity, they only offer the Panama 1 Balboa at " only 4.99 over melt" at 12.66 ( 12.66 x face).

Yes, APMEX does have some 90% bags, but a lot of people can't put out several thousand $$$$'s a one time, for those that just want a few hundred or less in face, I haven't seen many places where it's readily available for 10 X or under

FWIW, at the last coin show I went to junk silver was being sold from 10x to 12x face. I was not buying or selling, it was just an observation I made. I never found out what the dealers were offering though.

If it's bullion you're after, I'd recommend these:

http://www.apmex.com/Category/518/S...et__New.aspx
or these:

Pure silver rounds or bars at $13.50/ounce are a better buy than junk 90% silver at 10X face (almost $14/ounce).
