Are star notes really that rare? I mainly collect coins, however I am reading a lot lately about star notes. in fact, I work in a place where I have a lot of access to coins/paper money and I was going through the safe yesterday and found 3 star notes (a 5$, 10$, 20$). Should I keep them?

If they are in REALY good condition and I'm getting them at face value and I could afford to hold on to them for a while. yeah.

You may want to check out this offer to trade star notes from another poster. Here is the link.

They are at least scarce but probably not rare. You see the values that you have found. They represent replacement notes for damaged ones found by quality control at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

I recently won an auction for the 1993-1994 250th Anniversary Thomas Jefferson SMS

Included in the original holders, was of course,
the 1993 Jefferson Silver Dollar,
the matte Proof Like 1994 P nickel
and I guess it is unusual,
but my set has a star note 1976 Bicentennial $2.00 bill.

Other sets I have seen have the normal NON star notes.
I do believe that the STAR on US printed currency denotes that it is a replacement note.
These are printed to make up the difference for others that were misprinted or damaged for the same series. Damaged ones, are then supposedly destroyed.

I only care for star notes from older style US paper money. I think it would be a neat collection to acquire a star note from each of the 12 Federal Reserves of the same year with same signatures. RadaR star notes would be cool, or other interesting serial numbers.

The best star note I think would be a major printing error Star note as these are made in the first place to replace the same.
