Hi,

I'm new to the forum and actually only cleaned out my coin collection from 20yrs ago. I came across this coin and have no idea what it is and apparently it has a counterstamp(?) I'm actually not familiar with counterstamps too and just found a photo similar to the one on the coin while searching. I collect Philippine coins passed down or bought them from shops when I was younger

Can someone help me identify my coin, if it's real or not and also what the counterstamp means? Thanks so much! Also, is it valuable or is it just a normal old coin?

Spanish 20 Reales.

The F.7.0 is found on coins that could be used for legal tender in the Philippines.

"The authorities eventually abandoned overstriking for the hand held die containing the King's cipher "F.7.o". This new die was more compact and could be applied with a hammer, supposedly to the obverse of insurgent coins, foreign coins and badly worn or mutilated coins. With the implementation of the new countermarks you see a greater variety of host coins, including minor coinage such as 1, 2 and 4 Reales. Smaller denominations with countermarks from this series are all rare, with the 2 Reales being the most "common" and the 1 Real being the rarest."

Look at other examples of the counterstamp, especially on certified examples. The photograph shows a much cruder stamp than others I have seen. The stamps have been forged so check carefully.

chowpei The counterstamp is not genuine. The addition of it to this particular coin was an attempt to create a rarity. As was said the Spanish 20R coin was not particularly well known as circulating in the Philippines. IT falls in the general category of Numismatic Forgery.

The host coin used may be genuine or it too may be a forgery. More data would be needed to make that determination.
