Hi, I'm from a little town in SD. I've been collecting coins since I was a kid and now just starting with US notes. I have collected foreign nots in the past. Look forward to your sage advise.
BTW I have a 1922 Peace dollar with exuberant amounts of errors from a double strike, to numerous die crack but the most interesting error which I have found that no other one has after doing all the research on unique errors for this peace. Lady Liberty has a unique error on her lip that looks like a stamp from another coin. It could be from E Pluribus Unum with it looking possibly like the L and U.
Aeon, a set of good pictures are going to be required before any comments can be made about your silver dollar. I wouldn't get your hopes up too much though as what you describe is more likely damage than an error.
