While I understand the caution necessary when shopping on the internet (not just ebay), the same caution needs to be used when purchasing coins from dealers in brick-and-mortar shops. It all comes down to educating yourself. No purchases are safe unless you know about what you are buying.

ebay has been the scapegoat for scams for a long time. I think this is because they are so much more visible there; but keep in mind that there are just as many dishonest dealers with stores. Either a seller is going to be honest or dishonest, regardless of the selling venue.

As far as the coin in the OP, definitely counterfeit and I strongly recommend filing a claim with Paypal. Paypal tends to be on the side of the buyer and most sellers do not read all of the fine print to see what they need to do to be protected. If the seller didn't ship to you with delivery confirmation, he is already beat. One way or another, he did not send you the coin pictured. Also, by filing with Paypal, you should also receive your shipping back. I would go with "Item not as described" as my reason which a quick scan of the coin you received compared to the coin in the auction would confirm. I would also report this auction to ebay once you have received your money. Your report, coupled with his feedback which has a lot of complaints for misrepresentation, could get him booted.

I have bought many coins from e-bay and see many problems, for one there are many people that are very legit and do not deserve the "bad rap" that some people making a good living at selling coins in slabs that are as equal to a basement sweat shop business.I see that e-bay does nothing to stop this problem, why, MONEY... The scammers pay the company a steady stream of money and e-bay says "well overall his/her feedback is acceptable" and sorry there is nothing else we can do.I am a member of the e- bay coin forgery prevention and detection group, and the president was scammed by the same person as I was and we were left with a dead end to justice, lucky I received my funds back, though this will take a force or an administration greater than the present to stop all the crooks from lining their wallets and making a poor name for the rest.
BOTTOM LINE, BUY THE COIN, NOT THE SLAB...

PS: I think for people like these, we should bring back public stoneing!

Gotta watch that too though.
If I was to pick the biggest scam on ebay, it would be
coins sold in slabs to appear legit. You have brands like
SGS putting any coin it can get ahold of in a slab labeled
"MS-70". I have seen MS-70 (perfect) SGS slabs with
obviously circulated coins in them! They prey on the folks
that follow the "buy only slabbed coins" advice

There are quite a few of those basement slabbers on ebay. I have seen them time and time again. WCG is another one like SGS. Stick with the top 4 tier grading services and you will normally make out well. If I look at a slabbed coin I either get a bad or a good feeling about it..lol Its just me seeing the problems or good things about the coin.. I could tell you some stories about companies like SGS and WCG and the people that bought their coins trying to re-sell them to coin shops..

The 1902 shown in the auction is almost certainly fake,

Conder101- could you elaborate any on the "tells" for the coin in the auction photos? Only thing that stands out to me is the extra-wide rim with a faint ridge running along it, otherwise it looks darned good.

The seller is also listing a bunch of auto key fobs with manufacturer's logos on them... wonder what it would take to track down the trademark law department for those companies juuuuust to check to see if they're properly licensed...

I definatley agree that it is a fake. I do my best to avoid buying any coins from sellers on ebay, unless I know the seller. If you feel you must have the coin then I would suggest making sure that it has a log # from PCGS or NGC. Obtain the # from the seller before purchasing it and submit the number to PCGS or NGC to verify the authenticity of the coin.
