I am wondering if the Republic of Texas or the Confederate States of America ever minted their own coins, and if they did, does anyone have a suggestion on where to look for them?

Yes to both, Texas had a 1/2 Real minted in 1818 and the CSA had a half dollar and cent. I do not know much about the Texas issues but I believe that they were intended for circulation. The CSA coins were basically presentation pieces. The Texas and CSA issues are very rare and very valuable so you can probably forget about ever owning an original(there have been a couple restrikes of the Confederate cents and the last one occurred in the 60s for the 100th anniversary). In addition, the CSA/State of Louisiana(after secession) minted more than half of the total mintage of 1861-O SL half dollars in addition to some gold coins at the other two southern mints. Of course, those coins were federal designs but I do know that there are a few die markers on the half dollars that can be used to ascertain their pedigree to the CSA. The CSA was only able to mint the gold and silver coins because they were using the metal supplies left by the federal government. Once those supplies ran out, they had no way to issue more coins with no reliable sources of metal.

Texas and CSA issues are pictured in the RedBook, 2009 62nd Ed. pg 74 for Texas and pg 389 for the CSA.

Look at my avatar, I used the obverse of the CSA one penny coin. Picked up a copy set at the Vicksburg Battlefield museum several years ago. The stories of confederate coins are very interesting and should be found with a google search. The 50 cent CSA piece is quite a legend.

The Republic of Texas did not exist in 1818. I don't think I have ever seen any coins, but paper money yes.

Here is the picture of the 1/2 Real.

Correct. The short answer is, neither Texas nor the CSA made circulating coins. The Confederates made pattern coins, the Texans never even got that far.

Texas had a severe coin and bullion shortage throughout it's short life as an independent nation. The government had nothing to back up the promises of redemption on it's banknote issues, and everyone knew this. By the time Texas joined the Union, the value of the Texan dollar had fallen to just a few cents US; people thought the official redemption rate of 15 Texans to a US dollar was being generous.

OFEC collectors (like me) who want a representative for this country in their collections have to settle for buying a redback note.

I would also think that Texas paper money would be rare since they were short lived as an independent country. But I don't know that area so I am not sure.
