Team, I received this coin today from an internet seller and as suspected it is a definite counterfeit. Amazingly, the weight was almost spot on at 13.5 grams using my little electric coin scale; which I calibrated just before weighing the piece. The wear/nicks seems rather 'edgy and rough' and not like the other VF-EF-XF Bust Halves which I collect. Additionally, the feel is wrong too and there is no (silver) ring when dropped on a hard surface. Take a close look at the edge lettering as well, I tried to capture it using my old camera, but as you can see it's pretty good... Please be on the lookout for similar pieces as those who produce this garbage are getting better and better! Take Care Ben

Amazing. Nice catch. When the time comes for me to get a BH for the 7070, I think I will contract you to find a legitimate one for me!

Thanks! Of course, I will need two of them for the 7070: one lettered edge, one reeded edge.

Wow... except for where they tried to fill in the usual faded-out E PLURIBUS, I never would have caught that one.
It's just shameful that law enforcement does nothing about this stuff.

So what are your plans for the seller? I imagine that you aren't just going to let them keep your dough. Are you just going to try and get a refund, or are you seeking a 'pound of flesh' that might alert others to the situation? I know if someone on ebay did that to me, I'd be all over the winners of each of their auctions giving them a heads up. Too bad ebay did away with the ability to contact bidders before auction's end. I have alerted bidders in the past before they disabled the ability to do so. I would want someone to do the same for me!

Very good catch, looked passable to the average collector. I agree with ratio411......expose him so no one gets hurt.

They are getting better, it would take a practiced eye to catch the best of them from a picture without an Overton book. There are quite a few clues on this one as far as design and strike anomalies, but it would be easy to get fooled by pictures. Makes you wonder how many are out there in people's collections.

Quote: Very good catch, looked passable to the average collector. I agree with ratio411......expose him so no one gets hurt. Here is the auction. The seller offered a full refund after I notified him it was counterfeit, but that's one of the reasons I purchased it. He also said he was selling a collevtion which wasn't his (?) for additional college cash. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...220301521188

The auction says you can have a refund "less fees". Sounds like he wants to keep the ebay costs, as well as shipping 2 ways. I would make him pay every penny back and reimburse return shipping. This isn't a matter of simple satisfaction. This is fraud.

The seller was cleaning his hands so to speak when he wrote this "Questions-Ask. I really don't know much about this coin but will try to answer all your questions the best I can." Instead of just saying not sure if it is genuine. He sells coins, at least he must know, something is wrong. But do not condem all sellers as not everybody knows what they are selling is a counterfeit coin. They don't have a factory of fake coins to be sold as genuine, if they do then that is fraud.

I'll still hang onto it as some members off the BHNC say it's quite collectable and one of only a few to be of this quality. FWIW, I've been offered more than what I paid for it... Besides, if I returned it someone else might be easily taken in (if it was relisted) as you can see by the other bidders for the item.

I hope you paid with a credit card. The seller's comment about refund "less ebay fees" is BS. You should get a 100% refund including S&H and a credit card charge back will get you that. This CBH, if authentic, would have been worth $500 easily in the condition the auction pics show. Apparently a few people thought the better of bidding on this one.

I guess I can understand the ferocious stand some are urging.
To them I say it is a collectible, and the buyer wants to collect it.
The path may have been unpalatable, but the end result was satisfactory.
