Greetings:
After reading the topic of most expensive coin purchased, I was struck by the answer: "My first coin purchased".
This brought back memories of my first coin which was a 1954S for 50cents at a coin show in Hastings, Ne during the mid 60's. I know the dealer thought he made money on this rural yokel kid, since the coin grades AG. But I had to fill that hole in my collection at the time.
I was looking at the coin, when I was upgrading a few others. Turns out the purchase was well worth it as it is a San Jose variety.
Would like to hear other's on this "first coin" subject.

This probably isn't the first coin I bought, but definitely is the first that I considered important enough to remember. It was in a antique shop that was on the corner of two side streets in a town where I'd later go to high school. The coin was placed in a wooden cabinet by the window (left from the entrance). They never had many coins. I believe that the shop doesn't exist anymore. This was by far my oldest coin back then. Needless to say, it's still here, and despite its insignificant grade, I hope I'll never be forced to sell this one.

It was a tiny Greek ancient w/Medusa on the obverse. I was fascinated with ancients way back when. Now, I am strictly US coins.

Most people here know the first coins I got were two Eisenhower dollars, but I did not buy those, they were given to me by my father. The first coins that I bought, that were not gifts, are the members of my original 1969 proof set, which are now in their respective Dansco albums.

I bought my first coins at a coin auction I attended with my Dad. I don't remember the dates but I do remember buying some very fine or better coins. Among them were a Three Cent Nickel a Three Cent Silver and a Flying Eagle cent. I bought maybe 6 coins or so and had a great time with Dad. That was many years ago. Same timeframe, I remember my first coin shop purchases were a Carson City 20 cent piece for only something like 30.00 with LIBE showing so that would have been a fine grade, a Shield nickel and a couple of 1883 nickels one with cents and it was XF, and without cents in AU or better. I have none of these left, but wish I would have kept them, they were nice and all have appreciated in value, except maybe the 3 cent nickel.

I honestly couldn't say but I DO remember the coin that started me back into collecting really actively again. About 15 years ago I bought an 1833 capped bust half dollar Dollar. Paid $30 for it and it was a MAJOR purchase. My wife (of about 4 years then) and I discussed it before I bought it. Well, I still have the coin and we're still married. A good woman is my wife. Now I just buy what I can afford and it is not an issue (not that the first one was actually). I still buy on whims but it's always a cheap whim.

My first coin I actually bought would have to have been a 1971 Eisenhower dollar from a dude at a gun and knife show. The second coin I bought was a 1895 Indian Head cent from the same guy at a gun and knife show about three months later. How I really got into coin collecting was collecting the simple stuff like bicentennial quarters, fifty cent pieces, small dollars coins including SBA's, and any foriegn coins and wheat cents I would find in circulation. My job required me to handle a lot alot of change so thats how I started picking it up.

1909 VDB Lincoln. I was so young that my mom had to write a check and mail it in for me; I think it was something like 3 or 4 bucks. I still have it.

Mine was a 1909 VDB blazing red unc. I think it was 3 dollars (I'm really old). I wanted to fill the first spot in the Whitman Lincoln Cent 1909-1939 album. I still have the coin but now it is a beautiful toned light brown from sitting in the album for the last 44 years. The irony of the whole thing is I found one in circulation about 6 months later, could have saved my dollars!

I was given a nice set of circulated silver quarters by my grandfather. I bought a 1932D followed shortly by a 1932S to complete the set. So, a 1932D was my first.

The first coin I bought was one of three: a Large cent or one of two Silver Eagles. About ten years ago there was a very large coin show that came to town and I decided to go and see what all the hype was about. As soon as I stepped in I could not believe my eyes at all the different coins and types of currency and felt like I was walking through a museum more than a coin show. I was timid and afraid to touch anything (let alone ask to see something) and ended up walking around for about 2-3 hours soaking everything in. I decided to get a snack and figure out what I wanted to buy and take home as a souvenir from the show and realized there was two different booths I kept going back to and could not remember why so I went back to them and bought a Large cent from the 1840's and two Silver Eagles at the other. For the next few months I would look at them and wonder why I never saw anything like them before and wished I could get more. The sad part was that it took almost 8 years before I bought my next coin and got into collecting.
