The design of these has always struck me as being far ahead of their time. There is just something about that textured background that just does not seem 19th century.

Agreed--the reverse with 5 centimes somehow looks post-WWI, possibly all the geometric shapes.

Is there a die crack or some sort of strike error at 7 o'clock on the obverse between the star and the 1 from 1863? It almost looks like a double struck date

stratocaster, good eye!
I think that die crack is pretty distinctive, and as for the other mark--I thought it might be a die clash from the reverse?

A very distinct design indeed. My piece is 1862 and did see somewhat more circulation
