I need some help with this one. I snagged this old dollar recently without paying an arm and a leg (given the condition, that's understandable, eh?). Problem I'm having is I'm not at all sure how this one should be graded.

Spots all over the obverse of the coin, as well as a gouge in the inner thigh area - big old scratch on the reverse beginning in the eagle's neck area, extending across the top of the shield, and ending in the wing. Not to mention the excessive wear from circulation.

So.....if this were your coin, and you were listing it in your inventory, what grade would you assign it, and what notations would you make to yourself?

I think that one would be considered VG

Ralph,

The obverse pitting would be noted as "environmental damage".

If it wasn't for all the pitting on the obverse I would say F-12, but because of the VG-10.

I think it has VG-10 details.

Guys - I let it soak in acetone overnight, and this is how she looks now. I only posted the obverse to show the spotting is gone. What do you think now?

Actually, based on that picture Ralph, the coin looks much better.
