I found in my coin sorts the other day a 1966 Lincoln Penny that does not make the characteristic sound of copper when dropped on a table top. I have hand-sorted tens of thousands of pennies and this one does not make the ringing noise like other 1966 pennies. It makes a thud sound basically and that is very unusual as far as I know. I have not weighed it yet to find out if its metal content is off. Any chance that in 1966 the mint tried out other metal mixes than the 95% copper one?

JerrySpringerDo you have a picture to post. So we can see it? All 66s are 95%copper unless it was garage made(fake) I have a dime that someone made from lead. SO are you the real Jerry from the show? Just had to ask. Coindexter

First, welcome to the forum, I have seen your show.

Second, it would be nice to see a picture, unusual to see a fake LMC, but anything is possible.
(LMC= Lincoln Memorial cent).

A planchet with an internal flaw (such as a planchet crack) may not ring either.

I am not that Jerry Springer. I never was a mayor of any Ohio city. I still have not weighed the penny folks. Sorry about leaving this out there. I suspect it is an internally cracked planchet. That would help explain it IMHO. Thank you everyone for the welcoming salutations, btw.

A little about myself. I got into coin collecting last spring after a subtle notice that copper pennies actually had a metal in it making the penny worth more the 1 cent at the time. I always had some mild interest in holding onto old coins but never made a point of searching for them. I just assumed that you get random coins from making transactions at a sales counter and never thought about asking banks for coins. At first it was awkward going into banks and asking for $50 in pennies and all that stuff. After a while I learned that many banks usually bend over backwards to help me with my requests for coins they have on hand. The fun spread to nickel collecting and other common coins . All interest was at first based upon the metal value of the coins but now I collect coins for their circulation rarity too. Also, since the interest rate on money is low, I think it is a wash at worst holding onto coins instead of keeping the cash in a bank account. I'd sooner try to sell my coins on an auction site than turn them into a bank if push came to shove too.

I enjoy the search for the coins and the variety of results I get. Nice thing is there is no major rules to it except being polite at banks and not getting in trouble with the spouse for the time spent searching for coins.
