I just learned from Jared Stapleton (owner of Coin Expo show) that Don Olmstead died this past weekend, from a short, aggressive bout of cancer. Almost every coin show I have been to, had the Olmstead "we buy banknotes" banner. Don bought a number of notes from me when I used to have a shared table at the Edmonton shows. He wrote and updated the Canadian Coin News Trends banknote section on occasion. Really nice, informative guy at shows. He'll be greatly missed when we have future shows again... Yes, I remember first meeting him & buying some "Olmstead Original Unc" Birds $10 from him. He was friendly & quite gentle discovering a seller's interest & dispensing advice. I soon discovered how knowledgable he was & he became the 1st dealer I'd want to see at any show.
Great loss amongst the collecting community. He will be missed by many.
Thanks for sharing.

Aw sorry to hear about this. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but I did see some of his ads and articles in CCN.
Best wishes to his family and friends. RIP.

That is terrible news. I met Don at the RCNA convention in Calgary last summer. He was warm, friendly and engaging. I wound up buying 3 Canadian Silver dollars from him. He offered good prices and we even chatted about one of the items I bought for a few extra minutes. I was looking forward to buying more from him, and chatting with him, when the RCNA convention rolled into Ottawa. Alas, I won't be able to do that now. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. RIP.

Quote: My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. RIP. Yes & I have been recalling many fond memories of Don & his family at the few shows I've attended. He was always so relaxed, personable and friendly. As a dealer, he offered conservatively graded banknotes at very fair prices & enjoyed striking up a "deal." I was always impressed and learned so much from him. Such a great loss for everyone who's lives he touched in many different ways. Here's a brief article on him at CCN: https://canadiancoinnews.com/don-olmstead/

I just saw the news when reading the CN Journal, then came on here looking for a discussion on this.
It is very sad. Canadian numismatics has lost a very fine gentleman and A+ dealer. I was looking forward to attending the Toronto Coin Expo, as Don is always the first dealer I go to when I get there. Given that the show was canceled, I emailed Don my want list and purchased a couple of banknotes from him for very reasonable prices. In fact a large part of my Canadian banknote collection was purchased from him. I've also sold him a couple of notes in the past and found him to be fair. My condolences go out to Karen and his family.

I didn't know Don though I'd spoken to him over the phone over the years. He was very well known in the coin and currency community. How old was he? I've looked for an obit online and not found one.

I guess there are no existing obits online. Strange.

Checking again online after a period of time not a single reference to his age. That is odd. I'm just curious.
