 >Hey, is there anyone out there that does this hobby discretely and not let their other half know what they have invested? >Do you sometimes go to bed at night wondering if she'll ever catch you? >Do you ever feel guilty about how much money you spend on your coins instead of buying her roses and jewellry? >If your house was on fire would you save your coin collection before your spouse? >Do you hide your collection and never let anyone see it? >Do you only view it when nobody is around? >Do you make excuses to the Mrs. about why you don't want to spend thousand$ on a vacation because of that KEY date coin you want to purchase? >Do you ever worry how much of your coin collection you'll have to give up in a divorce settlement? >Do you hide the end of the month Visa statements from her in hopes of not getting caught and crucified? >Don't feel bad, your one among millions of die hard coin addicts out there with a passion that can never be satisfied! Not quite that bad but I have one advantage. Spouse just doesn't care about coins and banknotes. Just not interested.- - I can buy gold or silver - domestic or foreign- commemoratives or bullion. Same response - - hope you enjoy them! Guess what - I do Now I pick what I want (within my budget) and I buy it. I can even send catalogue pages to my family and circle coins I am interested in and every so often- I get one - it beats receiving socks and a tie So I sleep peacefully at night. but it would be so much nicer if other family members took an interest - because if and when something ever happens to me - It will all be theirs. Unless of course I leave it to my grandson who enjoys coin collecting

My wife has given up, now, she just does not ask. On a rare occassion, she'll ask "So, what did you get today?" (after a coin show). I'll tell her that I picked up (for example) a Barber quarter for $20, and the reply (always the same) is: "so, you just lost $19.75?"

My family has enjoyed the fact that they finally know what to get me! If they get me something I don't want or need, I don't let them know it. Bd

Its funny that we have people on this forum that have been married for many years that share the same type of relationship with their spouse that I do with my girlfriend of three years.
We don't merge incomes obviously so my money is still my money to spend. Plus I'm the more frugal of the two of us anyways so I'm usually the one with the discretionary spending and priority budgeting. But she was first way uninterested in coins, just thought it was something that would pass. But how I got her into coin collecting with me is introducing her to animals coins and she goes bananas over those.

My wife knows all about it. She goes to coin shows with me and loves watching me hunt. She asks good questions and I love teaching her. She is not a collector, but she always saves her change for me. She even knows when to get excited, like when she received a Delaware proof quarter in change one day.

My wife of 36 years still wonders why anyone could collect coins especially pennies. We (trying to be diplomatic here) decided that I should get a monthly budget item. Works well for me, I have money to buy pennies

Quote:I'll tell her that I picked up (for example) a Barber quarter for $20, and the reply (always the same) is: "so, you just lost $19.75?" And I'm getting REALLY tired of explaining that one to my girlfriend !>.... I bought "a batch" one day.......and she went through each one looking at them....I thought to myself...."yeah, she's finally coming around...look at her.....she's so interested now." But then she declares.....so, you paid $134.00 for $26.53 worth of coins ?.... Now I know she's teasing me.......but.....it's getting frustrating !

The last time I went to a coin auction like the one I am planning on attending this weekend, I came home and was showing off my new additions to my girlfriend, and when I was done she says, "Wow, how much did you spend?" I replied, "Don't ask a question if you don't want to know the answer..."

I am one of the lucky ones, my wife knows it makes me happy and as long as I can pay the bills then it is usually okay with her. I know that I can no afford a lot so buying $10-20 worth of coins now and hen does not get to her. I know what my limits are and if I did spend too much I would hate to see what she goes and buys to get even.

This is great, I hope things go smooth for you Glenz when she finds out. Where the heck do you keep all your coins then? Hidden? What if she is a collector and you didnt know either! ooH!
Now my wife and I agree that its my hobby and she wont say much about it. Besides, I run the money in our house and she knows I'm good with it. I always tell her that I could resell them for more and she seems to be happy with that...little does she know that I wouldnt ever sell unless I really had too :)

Secret life, that's great...that's true. My wife just tried to look at the internet bank statement the other day, thankfully she messed up the password enough times to lock the account! I just told her, "you see, I told you to just trust me, I'll take care of the bills".

Great topic! LOLOLOLOL My wife gave up complaining. Every once in awhile she'll use it against me when I complain about her spending.."well, you buy all those coins". That said, I don't let her know much about my buying. I pay the bills and handle the money, so she doesn't really need to know. I figure in 20 years she'll hug me when she discovers how my hard work and time has paid-off in value of my collection. That's the good thing about collecting, you're not going to lose money, I consider it an investment....so happens, it's also a lot of fun!
