Yup, its a long term investment if you think about it. As long as you buy them right to start with, you can always sell them down the road if times are tough. But lets be honest, i'd sell everything else before my coins :)

Confessions of a closet collector! I really enjoyed reading these posts. I am glad I'm not the only one.

Ya my wife is still amazed at the value of some coins you can find in your pocket. So she demands I look at all her change. It's working out good. It has kept me at home more and she would rather see me spend money on coins(investment)then blowing it on few drinks with the friends after work. Not to mention my health is better too.

My wife does not seem interested in the study of coins in the least. Certain designs she likes better than others. The details of dates and mintmarks, let alone any varieties, is unimportant to her. She does believe that they are worth the money I spend. She knows that if something happened to me, what she would have to do about them. I have them inventoried and valued. I can buy what I want, usually, it's something I can make a profit on or at least get my money back if I had to resell it. With money, I'm tighter than the skin on a hot dog when I buy. I look at lots of coins before I buy. I have been able to prove that I usually buy wisely enough over the years and we made money in antiques and coins. Right now, I am looking at some early proof Jefferson's. I have been through this routine before. Somehow it will happen again and I understand that she will say Whaaaaaaaaaaa ?!?!? When the bill gets paid for 30 cents face and it is a couple or few hundred bucks, I understand.... yeah I understand. But it happens every time almost. Like getting a Bill through Congress sometimes.

My wife of 36 years still wonders why anyone could collect coins especially pennies. We (trying to be diplomatic here) decided that I should get a monthly budget item. Works well for me, I have money to buy pennies
That statement is apparently true of most of the women on Earth. Women always yell we want equality but hobbies show just how different we all are. At coin shows, gun shows, knife shows there are usually about 95% men. At computer or camera shows I've seen about 80% men. At some coin and gun shows I've seen tables with jewlery and when asked why here I'm always told women come with their husbands or boyfriends and pretend to be interested but get bored fast so they end up at those tables and buy anything. Possibly just to get even for a lousy time. OK so just how many men want to go shopping with their wives for womens clothing, jewlery, even food for the house? Attempting to hide a coin collecting hobby from a wife gets real difficult when the amount starts to become extensive. Even worse with guns.

I learned the hard way that if I'm not honest about my finances, neither is she. And she's much better at spending money than I am.

Very interesting topic... and responses I've always handled my own finances, plus those of my significant other if necessary. I wouldn't have it any other way - being responsible for your bills is part of being an adult. Plus I work darn hard for my paycheck, and I play hard, including spending whatever I want to on my (multiple!) hobbies. Said 'privilege', of course, goes both ways. And for those of you who missed the prior thread on the women on this forum... I'm the wife. To answer the main question.. I get real funny looks when I'm peeking at pennies with a magnifying glass or spending hours trying to get just the right angle in a picture of one.. (also that question I love: "You BUY money?" ), but we respect each other's interests and even try to [appear to] listen attentively when the other is explaining something about them. And I get to deliver the odd looks when he's swinging a golf club in the garage with the door down, or trying to figure out how to turn his new gadget on.

I've heard of these "wife" things. They sound like trouble.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

She knows everything except the prices. I always tell her half the price of what I got. :)

Gee, maybe I have an odd relationship with my wife. I don't hide things from her at all. I'm free to buy coins and she is free to buy whatever it is that she wants. The unspoken agreement is that we won't collectively run our finances into the ground.

My Girl friend thinks I only buy ASE's, and only for investment purposes. She has no idea about the rest of the collection I have.

Very nice topic.
I'm open with my wife about what I buy. She gets somewhat interested sometimes, but most of the time doesn't care.

Quote:I'll tell her that I picked up (for example) a Barber quarter for $20, and the reply (always the same) is: "so, you just lost $19.75?" that's priceless :) Wait, you buy every Barber quarter for $20? ( I won't quit my day job )
