I just got this in my email from PCGS... "No more body bags! PCGS is introducing a major change in its grading process, effective for submissions received after December 1, 2008. Coins that would have previously been no-graded and returned in a body bag will now be placed in a regular PCGS holder and labeled simply "Genuine." Of course this applies only to coins that have been verified to be authentic. PCGS is dropping its Genuine-only service level. Now coins can be holdered in Genuine holders regardless of the service level for which they are submitted. Variety and attribution services will be provided for Genuine coins. For example, if you submit a number of Early Half Dollars with the Overton variety requested, your coins (assuming they are authentic) will be holdered with the Overton variety and grade or with the Overton variety and Genuine (see the PCGS website for a description of grading standards at https://www.pcgs.com/grades.chtml This service will also apply to crossovers, so all your coins can now be in PCGS holders."

"Crack !" That's the sound of me taking some of my problem coins out of the ANACS holder and submitting them to PCGS.

I think this will initially bring a lot more coins to PCGS for grading but in the long run it may hurt the re-sale value of PCGS slabbed coins.
Part of the reason people buy PCGS slabbed coins for a premium price is becuse they appear to be more selective in what they are willing to slab.

I think this is only partly true. PCGS is known as the toughest of the "Big 4" TPG. Slabbing coins simply as "GENUINE" shouldn't hurt the value of their regular slabs with assigned grades. That being said, I do agree that the volume of coins that will now (or could now) be in PCGS slabs might dilute their value slightly. Overall: It's a great idea.

About time! It's only fair really, they still make you pay for a bodybag.

Agreed that it is about time.
At least now you get a 'Genuine' for the fee, better than before.

Wow...I'm guessing they needed to encourage more submissions. If PCGS leads, NGC might follow.

Quote: Methinks all that is is a plastic body bag well, high valued coins (even if it has problems) are copied and that is why ANACS gets so much business, its not for the grades they put on the slab its to prove the coin is genuine to the buyer so in a slab that just says genuine is all thats really needed to prove that fact. And about NGC following suit, I don't think that will happen because then they would have to do away with NCS's part of slabbing problem coins and I just don't think that will ever happen

I agree with Bryan1315. It's better then a blank bag. Here is a quote from CCCS(Canadian coins) same type of deal Coins warranting negative comments such as "Cleaned, Scratch, Edge or Rim Nick, Polished and Damaged, etc. will not be put in Hard Holders but will instead be graded and encapsulated in our Soft Holder for the same price. The majority of companies using Hard Holders return these coins uncertified in a "Body Bag" and keep the price paid. As an alternative, CCCS will still certify these coins but use the Soft Holder format. Please ensure that coins sent for Hard Holder certification are problem free as no amount will be returned

I think it is a good idea and applaud their offering this service. IMHO, the only benefit any TPG slab gives is its authentication of the coin. I give no value whatsoever to the grade since I use my own opinion when buying. Also, I would just crack it out anyway, so any added monetary value would be lost at that point!

"If PCGS leads, NGC might follow." NGC has been offering a similar service for a long time via their brother company NCS. Submit a questionable coin to NCS; if it's bad, they slab as genuine and optionally give a details grade. If it's good, they just re-route it to NGC for a real slab. Smart marketing; they put some space between the good name of NGC and slabbed problem coins. They're the only TPG to do so. First post ! Hi, everybody !
