Can someone tell me how this happens and whether a lot of them are printed in succession or is this just a fluke. Last pic is through a loope at the date and MM. Is there a premium on a coin like this? I didn't see it in Cherrypickers. Thank you. nlp

Hi,

Your coin looks like what is known as an RPM. That stands for Repunched Mintmark.

It looks like one that is a known die variety. It appears to be one known as 1946D-1MM-001. There is a premium and this coin in this condition would be in the $3.00 to $5.00 range.

Prior to 1990 when mintmarks were added to the dies by hand with a punch, several punches into the die were needed to sink the mintmark to its proper depth. If the punch was not properly positioned between the subsequent impressions made in the die, you would see evidence of more than one punch on the coins struck by such a die.

I hope this helps,

Bill
