Antoninus Pius Bronze Diobol? - Coin Community Forum

Novicius Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 1168 Posts	Posted 07/06/2020 11:49 am This coin was listed as Roman, 1.5 cm in diameter and 9 gr. When it arrived today, it turned out to be 24 mm in diameter and 9.1 gr. It appears to be a diobol of Antoninus Pius minted in Alexandria. The L I Z in the reverse fields would date it at 138 - 161 AD. (Emmett 1739.17) Emmett states that it was rare for Antoninus Pius on a diobol, and that these were issues for his regnal years of 12, 13, 16, 17, and 18. The coin appears genuine, but is holed. On close inspection the hole in the coin looks to be very old. Why would anyone put a hole in a coin, but not deface it further? Antoninus Pius, Alexandria, 138 - 161 AD.
