About 15 BU 1988 cents were in a customer wrapped roll, this is one of them:

This one I would check with a magnet? Why? Note how the design is so changed on the right cross bar. If a piece broke off of the die and embedded into the coin, that would be a way to check it without ruining the coin. If there is a piece of steel in that area, it would stick to a magnet. (Also the weight would be a bit higher as well)

Thanks Merclover!

Interesting, thank you Coop. I will have to get a magnet from Walmart whenever I go there and then proceed to test this coin. I will update everyone whenever I have tested it.

Even a plastic magnet will work. It will identify if steel is present or not. Just never seen anything like that on coin before. Update us as I will need more information when I add it to my educational files.

Just tested it with a refrigerator magnet, no result. I presume that means there is no steel in it then.
Sounds good! Glad to be able to contribute to your files.

This what I was going to suggest. Newer Canadian cents can be magnetic/non magnetic, so a magnet is always handy for determining between the two. I recently was given a 3 inch refrigerator magnet and I took it and cut it into one inch pieces and then stacked them (which once stacked creates a single, stronger magnet). Just fyi. Easy & handy (&cheap) to have for numismatics use.
