I have this proof that look like it is copper nickel. But the book says all 1974 CN coins were matte and this is a nice cameo proof. But in person, the color looks like CN and it weighs a tad light (17.9 g). Anyway to verify it is silver?

There were matte and special UNC Can coins. You could try the icecube test?

There are machines which will give the purity-perhaps a local jeweler or coin shop could help you out.

... and we had another thread recently on proof coins from this era being slightly underweight: http://goccf.com/t/376711

So it sounds like enough evidence to suggest it's the silver proof (though it's odd that the weight of the CuNi coin isn't published anywhere I could find).

It passes the tissue test (cool !) as silver. But I don't think the business strikes were clad but rather solid copper nickel. Probably works the same though.

very interesting. I was telling folks back then to avoid buying Franklin Mint coins. Although I did buy this Franklin Mint print in the after market and still have it on my wall.

Baseball cards makers were doing the same thing. Grossly over-charging and trying to convince collectors that they were buying rarities (made the week prior - har!)
