I came across this coin a couple of years ago at a local dealer and bought it because I liked its toning. I did not pay much attention to grade then.

Following the Charlton grading book I think that this coin would earn at least an AU (please correct me if I am mistaken). Would it earn a MS? If not, what are the points of wear that would suggest so? Thanks in advance.

Only the slightest wear on the eyebrow and ear lobe.
Nice looking coin.

Au for sure. With all the scratches on the obverse, who thinks it was cleaned long ago and then toned?

I'll say AU-58, basically looks like a mishandled unc.

Thank you for the explanations! Now I see the wear at the higher contours of the coin surface.
