Sometimes there are black spots on pennies. I think they are called carbon (or sulfur) spots, and I gather that they are the result of oxidation. Other times, there are white spots on pennies. From what I have read, they are caused by liquid rinse solutions containing fatty acids. Would it be reasonable to say that these two types of spots develop independently of each other?
For instance, say I buy a slabbed copper cent, currently 95% red in colour but contains liquid spots but no carbon spots. Would I be correct in saying that these spots predict in no way the future development of black carbon spots?
