For the past few weeks I've been going through coins that we've been collecting and that have been passed down through generations in our family. So I really don't know what I'm looking at here, but I just found a 1999 P nickel that looks like it's completely made out of copper. But I can't find anything on the internet that says there such a thing as a 1999 copper nickel. Has anyone ever heard of this?#8311;

Yes,

...but I would venture to guess that it is environmentally damaged in some way because it should be a solid copper-nickel alloy (it can't peel apart like clad coins). Getting the weight of it might help, too. It should weigh 5 grams.

Sounds like a metal detector find - cupro-nickel coins usually go reddish-brown when buried in the soil. But photos would help confirm this!
