Two things going on here.
1. Either there is a split lower serif on this MM or split plating. Can't tell.

2. The ear looks doubled. Looks legit.

Could I get some input? Thanks.

How were mint marks positioned when the MM was hand punched, back in the day? Was it just by eye, a "line-up-the-mint-mark" thingy or a combo?

Note the tail of the '5' and the east loop looks like they were both affected during one event of damage.

So the MM AND the ear were affected by damage?

Not the ear area looks like an over polishing. Check to see if any of the devices in that area are smaller than normal. (Like the 'Y') When the dies get polished to remove die clash lines, some of the fields get altered and the coins will show a reduction of the die material. That is what I feel we are seeing on that area. Note even the date looks smaller than normal.
