Hi everyone, I just picked up this 3rd century Roman Sestertius. However, I am not quite able to ID it on wildwinds. The obverse inscription is a bit tough to read, but it appears to say "IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG." And the reverse depicts Pax standing left, holding branch and transverse sceptre, and S-C across the fields on either side.
Thus, it seems similar to RIC# 256a or 256b.

However, the reverse inscription does not quite line up. The left side says "PAX." But the right side only appears to have three letters. The first two being "OG".

Any help with this ID would be appreciated!

Pax reverse, and I'm seeing "CV" as the 4th and 5th letters after IMP (meaning the 7th and 8th letters of the legend) on the obverse. So I'm going with Volusian:

Btw, GG, not OG.

No prob. The second G of AVGG is normally tucked away down at 5:00 of the reverse, in a worn area of your coin. I wonder if what I took to be the first G is actually a rather rounded V, as on this one:

Or are both of the coins, yours and linked one, examples of mistranscription: AGG? In which case the 5:00 spot is empty?

Bob L - Great info! I appreciate it. You are quite the expert. Are coins of Volusian fairly rare? I have no intention at all of selling my coin, but do you think that I did OK by paying $10 for it?

Nice coin for ten bucks! I'm not the person to ask about the rarity of anything Roman, though. (Not my area)
