Hello all, I am really trying to learn how to grade more reliably on my own. I admire your experience and knowledge here. I have a 1921 Peace dollar slabbed as MS(62). Some of the hair on the obverse and eagle feathers on the reverse (right above the leg) look weak--I guess I can't tell the difference between weak strikes and wear sometimes. Can any of you advise me on how to distinguish an AU(58) with slight wear from an MS(62) with some softness in the strike?

Honestly this looks AU to me from the pictures. You can normally distinguish between AU and MS based off broken luster, but tarnish may obfuscate wear or make a coin appear worn when it isn't. when you shine a light on it does the cartwheel luster complete through the high points, or does it break at them?

Hard to believe that's "High Relief".

The coin has an overall smokey color--not the blast white ones that I think collectors prefer for this series. The luster is not broken on the highpoints, though, despite some hairlines on the obverse and feathers above the leg on the reverse appearing to be missing.

That would be your key indicator then. If luster is not broken, then the coin is MS.

^^^^^

I still think it's AU. Poorly struck to boot.

remove the $10 gold and replace with the reverse of the 21 to determine grade

Adam E nailed it, no breaks in surface luster where rubbing or wear would occur. I think MS-62 is the proper grade for this one.

1921 Peace dollars are VERY rare fully struck. That's the reason the relief
was changed in 1922. Looks MS to me. You will also find this issue with Buffalo
nickles and Walking Liberty halves.
