1944-S-Lincoln-Wheat-Cent:-Need-Help-On-This-One

the w in WE seems to be higher than the E, is this an error or just my old eyes. I just purchased a large lot of cents this is the first real possibility that I have found. what do you think?

If you purchased a large lot of cents the first thing you should do is sort them out by date. The first thing you would notice when you sorted down to having all the 1944 cents together is that all of them are like this. The W is a little higher on many years of wheat cents.

Just think of it this way...the letters are not punched individually into the die. All of the letters are placed into the die at the same time from a steel bar called a hub. The hub comes from a master die used for just that - making hubs. That master die comes from a reduction of a master engraving. So you see, from this you can deduce that all coins made of a given year have all the letters in the same place, save the mintmark, which was punched into each die individually by hand...until 1990.

I have about 175 44's, I am taking my time and almost there, this is the only one so far with this high w. I understand what you are saying about this and as you can see that I am a novice but please tell me if this would add any value or do I need to find another lot and keep looking. this is fun, it's like a treasure hunt only I don't know all the rules yet. I purchased a few books for values, saving up for the " CherryPickers Guide" I read forum's and look at what is out there to get an idea of what a true error looks like. Thanks for answering, I keep track of your postings too, your full of knowledge. thanks

Not a listed variety, and would need a closeup to tell more.

The problem is that since after 1908 all of the dies for a given year come from the same master hub, a single example with a misplaced or offset letter would more likely indicate a counterfeit or damaged coin than a collectible variety. (There are only a couple of exceptions when more than one master hub was used during the year on Lincoln cents, 1960, 1970, 1974, and 1982, and since 1993 with different hubs being used for business strike and proof dies.))

There are a lot of great known varieties for 1944 like the OMM D/S with serveral types (Note: this error does have extra value). Don't forget there are two 'S' mintmarks for this year (MMS-05, Serif S; MMS-06, Ball Serif S). Plus there are lots of RPM's DD's and my favorite MDO's for this year. This particular year has about every type of error represented that the mint has made.

Oops. You probably wanted to look at all your Lincolns and not just 1944 for errors. Have fun searching.
