Edit: are you referring to the widening of the lower tail of the S south. Or the image to the east of the MM? If you're referring to the south, it's just wear. If your referring the image east, more than likely dirt and discoloration resembling an S. Can't tell from the pics if it's raised, would need a close up angled shot.
