I see a '44 D Wheat cent where the mint mark--a D--was hit, with circulation wear contributing to the apparent flattening. The NE 'edge' of the mint mark appears to be a part of the hit. Not seeing an underlying S mint mark--given the photos posted.

I see the hit I'm talking above the D there seems to be the top loop of an S that seems to continue into the D as the other loop.

This does not appear to be either of the two well-known varieties. Circulation damage, I'd giess.
