I was traveling last week, and I stopped in a coin shop. Where I live in central KY shops are scarce (there is really only one in Lexington) so I like to try to hit a few if I am out of town. I was looking through a box that contained mostly 19th century type coins with various problems. I mainly roll search, but I just wanted to see what was there. Among other things, I picked out the coin pictured below. I know practically nothing about Seated coins, I just thought that despite the repaired holes, something about the coin (at only $5!) caught my eye. So, I purchased it. I did some research on it, but anyone out there that knows anything about Seated quarters will see the significance of this one. I had no idea what this was until I got it home and looked at photos of the two varieties. It sure looks to be a "Huge O" variety. I'd like to authenticate it, but due to the damage and the obvious cleaning it got at some time in the past, I'm afraid the NGC and PCGS would simply return it. Is ANACS the way to go? Love to hear any opinions you might have. Also, based on the photos does it look real to you? I think it is, but the possibility that it isn't is why I want to authenticate it.

Yep, that O is really huge I think you have nailed this cherrypick, I looked at a number of Huge Os and normal Os on Heritage and the Huge Os all have that broken R feature in QUAR- yours is there as well(only one die pair was used for these coins). However, do not take my word for it, have that sucker authenticated/attributed-I would say send it to ANACS or NCS. Even in that condition, it is still probably worth a few hundred. The cheapest one in Heritage archives was an NCS AG Details, Bent that sold for $161 but that was in 2004 so that price is pretty useless now.

A very rare coin, the huge O was apparently caused by a mint employee hand engraving the mm. Shame about the damage, but still a sweet deal at 5 bucks!

we all know that it'll come back as a hugh O, so tell ANACS that.
That may put the pressure on them.

I know it's way to late but how would you like to have been there when the idiot was making those holes in the coin?

I really wonder what it was about Seated Liberty quarters that inspired so many people to drill holes in them... it's really an epidemic!
