I am no expert on flying eagles, but this raised area seems to roughly match what some clashes on these coins look like. I realize the coin is in bad shape, but the obverse still has decent details and wondered if it's just a Johnny's garage coin or if something more interesting is going on here. Thanks! 1857 Flying Eagle cent - could that be a die clash?

Very interesting...I would say a clash...rim doesn't really show signs of a vise job...time to look at maddieclashes.com and study. Almost looks like the mule $20...almost Can't wait to see what the others say about it. smat

Kinda looks like someone cut the eagle and legend(and denticles) out to give them more definition. Is that brownish patch in front of the beak raised?

Kind of appears to be a bit of damage.

At first glance it mimics the Clash with the $20, pictured here: https://www.indiancent.com/catalog/...GS-60419728/However, the clash mark does not match the positioning of your coin. I would say this is some kind of odd PSD or a stain rather than a mint error/variety. -CH27

Definitely not a stain, as the field drops a lot going from left to right along that edge. Could be damage, maybe some odd application of acid, or something else. But what still keeps me thinking clash is that on the neck, and more clearly on the wing, the raised area appears to be raised above the level of the design. That would more likely need to be a clash to occur I should think. Anyway, I still don't really know what it is, but here is a close up showing the neck and wing where the raised area crosses and appears higher than the details.

Very intersting looking indeed... Definitely not one of the known the clashes though.

The coin is suffering from severe chemical erosion. Whatever corrosive substance or environment it was exposed to has eaten into the surface in a non-uniform manner. The undulating line separates an area of more severe erosion from an area of slightly less severe erosion. In other words, it's not an error.

Thanks for putting this to rest Mike. Always hopeful but ever doubtful about coins like this.
