Back in olden times They had a lot of different housing for veterans and other members of the armed forces. Same time period as when they had orphanages. Here is one Established in 1882, the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea offers Residential and Long Term Care programs to eligible Massachusetts Veterans. Our mission is to provide, with Dignity, Honor, and Respect, the highest quality of personal health care services to Massachusetts Veterans. Today the mission has expanded. Our nation's heroes risk their lives, while showing more bravery, selflessness, and determination than most people could ever imagine. Then they come home. What then? For many, they return to nothing. 50,000 veterans in the United States are homeless— An unacceptable number. https://www.asoldiershome.org/
Instead of money monthly stipend they where gine tokens to use in the homes small store. toiletries, cigars and chew and cigarettes, candy. They also cut down on the amount of whiskey that could be consumed.
They are like the tokens used in long term care sites before the local and states closed them down. Early 20th century
