I bought a digital scale today to weigh my pennies. I calibrated it and it passed the calibration test, but all the coins I have weighed are registering 2.1 grams, 1983, 1990, 2020. The 1942, 1960, and 1969 pennies weighed in at 2.6 grams. Well over twenty pennies and the Quarters are 4.9 grams. I'm trying to figure out how this is possible. Does anyone have another idea for this, other than an underweight Planchet?

it sounds as if your calibration on the scales is wrong to have that many Lincoln cents from different years be that much off.

Sounds like your scale needs calibration. Halfway through 1982, the mints switched from copper cored cents to zinc cored cents. So, in general, pre-1982 cents should weigh 3.11 grams, while post 1982 and newer cents should weigh 2.5 grams. Mint Weight Tolerance should be (by law) + or - 10%. Of course, well-worn cents could weigh less than mint tolerances.

Calibrate your scale using new cents {any after 1982), as I mentioned, they should weigh 2.5 grams, then verify your calibration using a newer looking (non-worn down) pre-1982 cents.

to the CCF! Hope this helps!

to CCF. Copper U.S. Lincoln cents weigh 3.1 grams until the year 1982 when copper plated cents started. The copper plated cents are 2.5 grams. The mint tolerance is +/- .13 on the copper and +/- .10 on the copper plated ones. You also need to factor in wear on the coins. If you think your scale is accurate, you may want to buy a different brand of scale and see what happens.

Thank you all so much! I am in the process of getting another scale and an actual calibration weight set. I think that will definitely be a great help.

Thanks again and I am very glad to be apart of the coin community!
