My 5th Greatgrandfather, a militaryman married a noblewoman descendant of King Ferdinand III "the saint", King of Spain. King Ferdinand is a descendant of Rodrigo de Vivar "EL Cid", who is a descendant of Emperor Theodosio I, born in Cauca, Hispania, son of Count Theodosio "El Viejo", military officer of Valentiniano I. If you are a descendant of a noble family everything is documented in the archives and only descendants of knights can become knights so your family tree is investigated and documented for your ascendants and to verify the purity of your christian blood.
