NGC - Coin of the Day: Before it was featured on the Connecticut State Quarter, Connecticut's Charter Oak was on the obverse of the 1935 Connecticut Silver Half Dollar Commemorative. The centuries-old tree blew down in a storm on August 21, 1856. It got its name when Connecticut's Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden in it to avoid confiscation in 1687.

My favorite commemorative half by far. The tree fills the obverse beautifully, and the chiseled Deco eagle is one of the absolute best of the 30's designs (on par with the Barnum reverse, another masterpiece).

I agree: this design is more medallic in the artwork than normally occurs with coin design.

No doubt, Henry Kreiss, the coin's designer, was a talented artist/sculptor. He was also responsible for the Connecticut Tercentenary medal.

One of my favorite coins. The area of Ohio I live in was a land grant from Connecticut to some citizens who suffered fire losses from the British during the American Revolution. The land was known as The Firelands.

Fremont Ohio was the home of Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes had some oaks planted on his estate that were from acorns produced by the charter oak. You can see those trees today.

I started a business in 1990, my logo incorporated the Charter Oak design from this coin.
