Hi,
Does anyone have any idea please what's going on above the lettering "United States of America?" The letters seem to be joined at the top by a crooked sort of line.
Could it be the result of cracked die perhaps, or metal fatigue? Post-mint damage maybe?
Any information from more authoritative US coin collectors would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks!

Thanks Keith for your warm welcome.
I wasn't sure if a die crack could be that extensive but apparently it can!
Thank you so much for your reply.

Continued..
I heard somewhere that the rays between the stars caused a lot of problems for the mint because the amount of material that needed to be displaced in order to achieve a satisfactory result and the immense pressures involved, ultimately took its toll on the dies and gave them a short working life. That makes a lot of sense.Thank you again

, huge die cracks, the die was close to the end of it's intended use,, they really pushed the life of the dies, back in the day..
