Hello!

I'm trying to do some research on the many die varieties of the Draped Bust Dollar (1798 in particular).

I've been Googling like mad and even searched this forum but the topic doesn't seem to have come up.

First of all, I see textual descriptions like:

--9 knob
--10 arrows
--5 bars
--wide date

That's all well and good, but I'm really looking to decipher those coded varieties written like: "B-9, BB-121" etc, that you find on the label of the slab.

I need to buy a book on this stuff so if anyone has any recommendations or can pass on a website please let me know.

Your help is greatly appreciated as always.
Thanks.

The United States Early Silver Dollars 1794 to 1803 by Jules Reivers. Amazon has 14 used copies at the moment, eight of them for under $25.

This book will answer you questions about the B and BB numbers as well. The B numbers refer to th numbering system by Bolander (I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember his first name) in his book on early dollars. His book is still available and not a lok different from the Reivers book, but Reivers is more available. The BB numbers are from the Bowers/Borckhart books on silver dollars. An excellent two volume book that covers dollars from 1794 to 1935, but long out of print and hundreds of dollars if you can find one.

For a website you might try http://www.earlydollars.org/wizardhome.htm

That site will help with attribution, and they show pictures of the features they are looking at. If they ask pointed 9 or knobbed 9, your will see a picture of each etc.
