Not true. Ever go to the zoo? Lots of Buffalos there

Should have probably been clearer, the animal on the coin is a Bison, not a Buffalo. The Bison is native to the Americas the Buffalo isn't.

And aren't they really Indian Head Nickels

This isn't India, if not Bison Nickels, they are Native American Nickels.

Just looked at the poll on the other thread. 31 votes for buffalo, 2 votes for bison. You may be technically correct hfjacinto, but I don't think you'll convince many "old" collectors to change their ways.

We would have better luck getting the cents out of and the dollar coins into circulation.

I'm glad I've stumbled into the fun section of numismatics.

My thread. They are Buffalo nickels!

Just an update. I've generally spent the last week browsing and pondering. Its also given me time to sort through part of the collection that have been in hiding for twenty years or so.

I stopped by the LCS and focused on the BUFFALOES for a while, looked at the grades, strikes, lusters, etc. Browsed the ebay to get an idea of what the market looks like. I'm liking the XF/AU range in general if there is still luster and a good strike, so I'm leaning into a nicer set unless the budget says No! or the concessional BU on the common stuff.

In digging into the dusty corners of my collection, I also found 4 more BUFFALOES that come my way from my grandpa, which is awesome in all ways.

Also, in pulling out the collection over the weekend, I was also reminded of the Capped Bust Dime & Half Dime, and Draped Bust Cent & Half Cent date sets I had started way back in the day around the time I was finishing high school. I'd forgotten I was 2/3 of the way into the Dimes, and I had done a decent job of picking out solid F+ coins too for several of them. I'd also realized that for V nickles, between what my grandparents gifted and some odds and ends via my parents, and an 1886 key that popped up through a box of stuff from my great-grandparents, I had several F2-G4-ish on that set and I owe it to my family history to finish it with my daughter. It would result in a 4-5 generation set, which might not be the sexiest in this grade, but a really cool connection between the generations. So my journey for the next while might be less focused than just BUFFALOES, but also make strides at finishing these date sets.

What are these BUFFALOES you speak of?

Just a smidgen of an update. I don't have any of the stunning pieces on display in the other Buffalo thread, some truley remarkable specimens there.

What I have leaved: With my Hoard of 82s, I did a lot of my shopping online and through specialists, die varieties or ancients. There wasn't much general stuff anymore, so I didn't spend too much time in local shops that generally did general stuff.

With the buffalos, I am quickly learning that in-person is about the only way I can go. In browsing at a recent coin store and a couple local shops, I see that little details such as minor dings and scratches are rather common among the Buffalos and rarely noted by the sellers. Likewise, the variability in strike quality can to hard to photograph.

I would certainly prefer this method as well, but unfortunately all my LCS's are STILL only dealing bullion after 10 months going on eternity. Judging off of pics can certainly be tricky. It does make it easier if it's a seller you've dealt with and have an understanding of how their coins actually look in hand vs. seller pics. Going off a majority of ebay seller pics is less than ideal.

Especially with this series, as I mentioned in my original post with the number of years/mint issues it had, in hand examination when dealing with raw examples is VERY beneficial. Same holds true with already slabbed examples, though you do get the TPG's opinion up front (take with a grain of salt).

Ultimately, take your time, buy a coin that YOU are happy with and suits the needs/wants of YOUR collection, and have fun! ( and sometimes a few headaches).

I've had the same issue even with my low cost bison collection. It's hard buying coins (that aren't slabbed) from pictures

But I've had the same issue that TY had. There isn't much locally, hence why I have 5 of the 7070 coins on hold.
