Hi everyone,
I didn't get to do a proper introduction yet....Just joined yesterday. I'm 37 years old and I'm a fairly new silver stacker/ coin collector from Oregon. I'm mostly focused in silver like silver eagles or bars/rounds and "junk" silver dimes/half dollars/etc.. I have a touch of "prepper" in my approach, but I've been increasing in my interest in various older coins, and am looking to start a nice little coin collection on the side. My main interest will always be in accumulating the ounces in silver or gold, but I also feel learning about the various coins and maintaining a collection will be a fun (and maybe mentally stimulating) hobby; more so than just only accumulating raw metal.
I don't know anyone else locally that's in the coin hobby, and after googling different questions that I had, this forum kept popping up with the answers - so I thought I might as well join! I've had a good time so far just browsing around, and looking forward to getting to know all of you and learn and grow within this community.
Thanks!

Hello silverstash119. I would suggest a short set of Walking Liberty half dollars. That's the years 1941 to 1947. A classic design which was the ancestor of the current, bullion one ounce dollar coin. (Only the design was executed BETTER!) This has the advantage of being 90% silver and, in circulated grades, being available for a little more than melt value. (Oh heck, grab a nice MS coin and compare it to the current one ounce coins.) Definition from PCGS: The old Whitman coin albums of yesteryear broke down the Walking Liberty set of 1916-47 into two sets, the 1916-40 issues and the 1941-47 dates. Thus, the "Short Set" was born, and it's more popular today than ever before. Many collectors absolutely love this series in Gem condition, yet they can't afford the 1919-D, 1921-S and a few other dates in top condition, so this is a great collecting option. As this is being written a couple of dates haven't been certified in MS67, but a beautifully matched MS66 set will do just fine! Check out the fair market value for examples in VF to XF condition. Relatively cheap and still beautiful. http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/wl...icesgd.shtml

@suipakpaikungfu - So am I (West Linn specifically), thanks! @matthewvincent - I don't have any Walking Liberty halves (yet), but would love to add some to my stack. With the huge increase in premiums on silver bars/rounds, I've shifted a little bit recently to pre-'64 silver coinage, which kind of got me more interested in coins in general. Thanks for the suggestion!

You are welcome! Anything less that half dollars would not be appropriate for you. I thought about Franklin halves but the design is not so pretty. Still, the are common, bullion coins and cheap. Silver is Silver!

If you can find a coin dealer with "bargain bins" of halves then spend some time digging. Close to melt value with these...

@matthewvincent
I'll have to do some exploring, I've been pretty strictly using online dealers and auctions; I'm curious if local dealers have better deals.
With that said, @suipakpaikungfu, any fair local dealers you can recommend?

I'm a part time or vest pocket dealer, so can probably help out with some stuff. The advice on where to buy will be free, as will where I'd recommend to buy silver. Try emailing me through here if you can, I'm not able to email you.

Looks like new members can't email yet, so not at this time, don't want to come across to the community as having alternate motivation other than just learning/contributing if I can.
Thanks though!
