NGC - Coin of the Day: On this day in 1964, Mozambique's war of independence against Portugal began. This coin comes from near the end of about 400 years of Portuguese rule in that part of southeastern Africa.

Type: Standard circulation coin
Currency: Escudo (1911-1974)
Composition: Bronze
Weight: 2.9 grams
Diameter: 20.3 mm
Edge: Smooth
Orientation: Coin alignment
References: KM 75, Schön 15
Obverse: Arms within crowned globe, date at bottom.
Lettering: COLONIA·DE·MOÇAMBIQUE, 1950
Reverse: Value in center, legend surrounding.
Lettering: REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA, 20 CENTAVOS
