Heritage Auctions - Charlotte, North Carolina may not be a town known for coins today. However, it was once the home of an important Southern Mint--the Charlotte Mint produced coins with the "C" mintmark from 1837 until the Civil War.
This 1854-C $2 1/2 Gold Piece from the Canandaigua Collection is a great example. It offers history in spades, originating from a branch mint facility that few outside of coin collecting know about! Such pieces are quite scarce. Out of the tiny 7,295 coins minted, only around 105 to 145 pieces are believed to exist today.
