@gma, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I'm a little out of my league on this one, it looks more like circulation damage than an over date to me.

This is an 1882 nickel with a die chip in the date. These are so commonly confused with the 1883/2 nickels that they listed them in the CherryPickers' Guide as an example of what not to look for.

First glance at the date tells me it is too compact to be an 1883 logotype so that shoots down the chance of an overdate right there. On the 1883 the digits are wide apart and there is almost enough room to put another digit between each of them.
