Its hard to tell with the Picture. It looks like a Hit on the bottom of the D and the Top looks like It might have Signs Of a repunched. Can you get a Better Photo Of the Mint Mark Ple ASE

Too bad about the fingerprints (which you just added to).

I'd recommend you lay your coin down on a solid flat surface and photograph from above.

I tried my best to get a clear closeup and also taking pictures through my loupe, but it looks like I need to invest in a digital microscope after all.

I think Dave is right about the hit at the bottom.. something must have hit it just enough, and in just the right spot so that it separated metal only in that spot.. but there seems to be many signs of an RPM as well.
