I got a box of brand new 2020 Salt River Bay quarters today from my bank. I found this one that was super odd . What's going on with the color? There is a definite different feel to the coin as well. I took a couple photos with one of the other coins to help show the color difference. Haven't weighed it yet. Thanks!

Looks like an annealing error akin to the "Black Beauty" nickels of the late 50's?

Probably just exposure to some unknown environmental condition.

I do not know enough about the minting process I guess to understand the environments that a planchet and minted coin are subjected to that would cause this coloration difference. It was the ugly duckling out of the 2,000+ coins that I had searched prior to finding this one. All the rest were bright shiny typical business strike 2020's. It does feel different in the hand as well.

looks like it sat in a water fountain for a year or two. A product of the environment it was exposed to IMHO

I had a State Quarter from an original roll that was blackened but the black on it in my case was grease that was never cleaned off the coin.

I see my post is getting some new comments. Just a recap - I pulled this coin from an unopened box of brand new quarters from my bank. All the quarters were 2020 D Salt River Bay. Based on this I am deducing that it happened at the mint, but how - not sure.
